About the tour
Come and see living proof that nature can recover from anything. In 2003 a huge fire in this mountain village destroyed thousands of ancient olive trees. From those ashes came the idea of creating a botanical garden that today is the only one of its kind in Europe.
This isn't just a walk in a park. It's a journey through thousands of plant species – from exotic kiwis, kumquats and banana trees to aromatic spices whose scent fills the air at every step. As you wander the shady slopes, you'll feel time slow down.
What to expect
- Closer to nature: see how the spices you use in your kitchen actually grow, and marvel at flowers in colours you'll struggle to name.
- Mini zoo: along the way you'll meet donkeys, fallow deer, tortoises and proud peacocks. With a bit of luck you'll see rare black bees, which until recently were thought to be extinct!
- Food straight from the garden: this will be one of the best meals you have on Crete. At a small taverna with a terrace overlooking the gardens you can order dishes made with fruit and vegetables picked right next door. Chicken with orange and lemongrass or fresh tzatziki taste completely different here.
