Knossos, Heraklion & Rethymno
The treasures of Knossos and the charm of Heraklion
A visit to the Palace of Knossos is an unforgettable journey to the heart of ancient myths. Right next to Heraklion, this legendary site was the centre of Minoan civilisation and home to the mythical labyrinth of the Minotaur. You'll explore the ruins reconstructed by Arthur Evans, which give you a sense of the power of ancient Crete. Walk the wooden pathways and lose yourself in the legends of King Minos – with a guide, or with interactive tablets that bring the history to life.
The Heraklion Archaeological Museum
After Knossos it's time for the Heraklion Archaeological Museum – one of the most important museums in Greece. Here you'll see the artefacts that brought Minoan civilisation to life. Highlights include:
- The Phaistos Disc – a mysterious clay disc with undeciphered symbols.
- The Snake Goddess figurines – symbols of Minoan beliefs.
- Original frescoes – showing how lively the culture of ancient Crete was.
- The bull's head rhyton – a ceremonial vessel that shows how important the bull was in local mythology.
Relaxing in Rethymno old town
On the way back we stop in charming Rethymno. It's the perfect time for a stroll through narrow streets where Venetian style meets Ottoman atmosphere. Relax in a café on the square, walk along the promenade by the sandy beach or pick up unique souvenirs in local craft workshops.
